The first inspection of the nine sites under Mevedir mandated by the Horticulture and Cash Crops Development Department has been successfully completed on 17th June 2009. Institute of Marketocology (IMO), a Swiss based firm has been chosen as the certification agency for these sites. Mr. Vasudevan and Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh from IMO’s Bangalore office conducted the inspection which started from 13th June 2009. Earlier, one of the nine sites was covered on 6th June 2009. Individual visits were made to farms larger than 4 Ha and other smaller farms chosen randomly at each site. In each farm, spot visits were conducted to the fields, livestock sheds and the storage places of the farmer. All these were thoroughly inspected and interactions were held with farmers to understand their level of understanding on organic farming practices and also their recent farming practices. Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh the external inspector was accompanied by Mr. Yash K. Shrestha, Manager, Head Office Mevedir, Mr. Hoshiar Singh, Dy. Manager, District Office Jorethang and assisted by the respective Field Supervisors and Field Officers. The external inspectors interviewed the farmers and also the field officers of MEVEDIR in the respective sites. The inspector also visited all the Project offices at the respective sites and diligently checked all the ICS related documents and gave his critical observations and suggestions thereof for improvement to the Supervisors. The risk level for contamination was found to be very minimal at the project sites, which is definitely good news for Mevedir. However, in some of the sites where horticultural crops are grown in large scale (like green vegetables) the farmers were found to be using prohibited substances. They were warned and given instructions on improving their organic practices if they were interested in getting organic certification. The extensive tour of four days managed to cover the nine sites and meet thirty representative farmers from all the project sites. The field visits were followed by discussions on the findings and suggestive actions for improvement at the Jorethang District office. On the final day the team also interacted with the Dy. Director HCCDD, Jt. Director, FSADD West District and KVK officials at KVK Gyalshing office for a de-briefing session on the visit and also to collect information related to the ICS project. A detailed report on the visit will be submitted by the External Certifying Agency both to the Horticulture and Cash Crops Department and MEVEDIR at a later date.
