Buck Wheat

The terraced fields in the rural areas are extensively used for growing this crop. The seeds of this plant are crushed and made into powder for sale in the local market. Two special varieties of this buckwheat are found in Sikkim which is locally referred to as the sweet and bitter variety. The tender shoots and leaves of this herbaceous plant is also cooked as vegetable. In sikkim the Buck wheat pancake and bread is consumed specially when people are observing fast in rituals or also given to infants as food suppliment. Our certified farms produce buckwheat in reasonable quantities.
